Requirements: What do you need as a DM?

Posted by MkaY On June - 30 - 2009

Starting a campaign can sometimes be overburdening. As a game master, you’re the one who does most of the work and you’ll be the one who makes it happen. Is this the truth? It is true, that game masters may get their FUN! also from other sources than players. I even wrote about it months ago, but that is not the issue here. Do you think players also can also contribute when the actual game begins? Are there any requirements for your players or do you allow them to be this “I’m this fighter, I don’t remember his name – let’s play” type of players. I don’t because I require a “budget” to establish the campaign. Let me explain;

Imagine yourself to be a marketer in a big company and the boss comes to you and says: “Hey nerd! I want you to renew the whole marketing of this company”. You agree and wonder where to start. Then you think about your marketing budget and notice you don’t even have one. You cannot do your work, if there is no budget. There is no basis for your work.

The same comes to the one and only requirement that I have as a Dungeon Master and that is the character background. It does not have to be novel or anything grand, but it should answer some key questions of the character and in the same time, the player wants as well. That’s difficult you say? Have you heard about The 10-minute Background (developed by The_Stray)? In an attempt to get all the information I need to create stuff from character backgrounds without having to continually push for information, I am asking my players to create their background with the steps of the 10-minute background:

That wasn’t too hard. Now you have a budget and you know where you can and moreover where should you go with your campaign. Even the character creation helps dungeon masters to guide their campaign in the right direction. To the direction where the players and dungeon master together wants it to go. But this was only my requirement because it helps me as a DM to deliver the FUN!

What are your requirements? Do you have any? Explain why and help me see the other side of the coin!

The Merchant’s Domain #1

Posted by MkaY On June - 29 - 2009

Ok, I have to admit it. It felt good to sit around the table after a long break. In overall, the first session of our new campaign was good and hours were well spent. Since in our group almost everyone is still getting used to the “new” 4th edition, some time was spend to familiarize ourselves with the rules and what had changed. I remember having the same problems as my players had during the combat; forgetting their abilities i.e. warlock’s curse or those sneak attacks every time there is combat advantage (and that’s lot!). To a group where there are two and a half rogues it is quite important thing to remember! I’ll go through the session in general, not trying to cover tiny details what happened. If I have time, like I have said, I’ll do it more thoroughly when it is time for the Story Hour.

The characters of the following Campaign:

Mort Babcock – Human Rogue fond of Shar
Ilyas Pachera – Human Swordmage with hatred agains Red Wizards
Gildin Ironstar – Dward Fighter from the past accidently drifted to present.
Enok Markhorn – Human Rogue who has been living simple life and seeks something new.
Dabbil – Gnome wizard with past in slavery
Nexus – Young Tiefling Warlock running from her past.

As background information, there have been numerous strange murder cases recently in Athkatla. The city guard and even the Cowled wizards have not been able to identify or catch the killer. Fear strikes the residents and strange things continue occurring in the city and then, the campaign begins.

An old dwarf, a bard, known with several names and having strong connections everywhere and especially to every character individually, had gathered our heroes around the table. Knowing that every person here was unique and different, he let them to get to know each other for a while. A little tension between characters was strongly present, but eventually everyone opened up… at least a little. The point was that characters accepted each other and were ready to work together for the one who had gathered them here. When that had been settled the dwarf explained why exactly he had gathered them here.

He explained that Faded Ages, a memory tailoring service working in the city had something valuable to him. His memory sphere containing his own memories he had erased to protect himself and the information it contained; keys to the several hidden portals within the city, he believed from the hints he had left for himself. However there was a problem; He was not able to retrieve the sphere himself. Dwarf’s alias; Rolo Gemcutter had established strong position among the 42-Merchant families in Athkatla now had enemies wanting him harm. House Vymmarss where those enemies, and they were the current owners of Faded Ages. However, it was known to him that House Vymmarss was not aware, that Rolo Gemcutter’s memories where stored in Faded Ages, so it was imperative that the memories were retrieved in secret. So the heroes had a huge task. Investigate where the Memory Hold was located and retrieve Rolo Gemcutter’s memory sphere.

They began by searching knowledge about the previous owners; a Mercantile House owned by families Erahn and Sedarui. They quickly discovered that Sedarui family had gained big profits when the ownership had changed and thus they had moved to the South to establish new businesses of their own. However, the other family still lingered in town involved in spices and importing of northern clothes. Erahn estate was quickly under investigation; Nexus, disguised as member of one of the Waterdeep’s merchant families, arranged a visit with lady Odala Erahn at the estate. What followed was trouble: The bluff was too obvious and the whole party was quickly driven away from the estate. Cursing that heroes didn’t do their research well enough, they developed another plan. One with more direct solution:

Tiny Deaths, a local store specialized in poisons, was soon visited. They had the funding and full support of Rolo Gemcutter to use any means necessary to gain access to the Memory Hold. Expensive and sophisticated goodnight tincture should do the trick, and almost it did; when our heroes infiltrated the Erahn Estate (after bribing the kitchen’s chef to use the tincture and the collapsed people) someone noticed them. A half-orc mercenary hired to keep an eye on the estate from outside due the previous suspicious actions of the visitors. Big problems occurred as the patrolling city guards were nearby. What eventually happened was an incident where; Nexus killed the mercenary with powerful thrust of arcane power surely alerting the cowled wizards, Ilyas set the estate on fire to cover their escape and Enok and Dabbil searched the upstairs for clues as the smoke emerged and finally Mort distracted the guards away from the scene. As they fled they saw the arcs of light flashing in the sky. They made it just in time before the cowled wizards arrived.

Luckily for our heroes, their actions were not totally in vain since they found a page of a journal between one of the tomes they stole which talked about the deal with carriage service and especially hired guards on the last day of every month. The date of the diary was two years old, but it was at least something.
Dabbil, having a hunch on finding the actual location by examining the families other ownerships as well dated to near the contract. Suspicious thing was that family Erahn’s remote unprofitable silver-mine was also bought during the time of the ownership change of Faded Ages. It was possible that memory hold was hidden somewhere there. Meanwhile Enok was getting to know the people working for the specific carriage service mentioned in the journal. It came out that they were doing shady jobs as well, depending on the client and their needs. In addition, the carriage service did have business also on the Cloud Peak region’s mines. Our heroes decided that it was time to investigate the remote, unprofitable silver-mine.

All but Mort set out for the journey since he had personal matters in the city and promised to follow after it was done. When other members had waited more than a day, it was decided that Ilyas rode back to see what had happened. Ilyas found Mort standing stupefied without his horse and back bag next to the main road. Someone had stolen his gear while he slept. Refusing the ride Ilyas offered, they walked back to the camp and Mort was looking in the same time for potential tracks to follow. Hard pavement of the road made it impossible.

Once everybody was back together, they set out on their journey again. The long hours on the road were exhausting and eventually they had to rest. During their night rest, a small figure was noticed lingering around the camp. Once the figure noticed it had been seen, it escaped. Small footprints left behind. Being alert didn’t do enough and the heroes were ambushed. Band of goblins attacked, peppering arrows from both sides of the road and blocking the way with melee warriors. A fight emerged and after a long and exhausting battle, our heroes emerged victorious…

Favorite 4e Resources

Posted by MkaY On June - 26 - 2009

I have always liked one-stop places sites to see all the necessary links and resources to get for my games. I believe that there are numerous such places, but even the thought the process of finding them is very tiresome. So now it is time for my contribution since recently I’ve been introducing new set of players for upcoming 4th edition FR game and. Once again, I needed those resources. So without further ado, here are the 10 most useful resources I’ve stumbled upon (Character sheets, Character generators and other resources:

(1) 4th edition official character sheet – Official sheet from Wizards of the Coast

(2) Shado’s Character sheet – This is a visual, color landscape character sheet. It comes with complete sheet to record your powers as well as a sheet for rituals.

(3) Kiznit’s Character sheet – This is the one I use. Simple grayscale character sheet way better than the official one. The slot item on the second page is fantastic. Great place to store the power cards. I suggest using Kiznit’s character sheet with Granpa’s power cards. Works like a charm.

(4) D&DI Character Builder – The D&DI Character Builder allows you to create characters from levels 1 to 3 for free. So far as I have seen, it is very useful and easy to use. Excellent resource.

(5) Seventh Sanctum – This is not actual generator, but it holds several useful and funny tools for backgrounds and quick NPC’s and concepts as well.

(6) Granpa’s Power Cards – (1500+) set of power cards in PDF format. Not only power cards, but cards for feats, class features, items, weapons etc. Very useful collection and my favorite. Comes with a template to add something your own.

(7) Monster Cards – Everything from Monster Manual 1 and They are formatted to print out at 6″x4″ and include the stats, but not the history or tactics. Very useful to make the things behind DM screen more clear.

(8) Sortable Monster Manual index spreadsheet with built-in encounter calculator – A must. Nothing more.

(9) The Official DM screen. – Just buy it, not too expensive and most useful and good quality. Worth of mentioning even in this list.

(10) Adventures and maps can be found at http://www.dungeonmastering.com/ Worth to take a look at.

Beginning: The Merchant’s Domain

Posted by MkaY On June - 22 - 2009

Next sunday we’re going start our new campaign titled “The Merchant’s Domain” (Yes, also known as Amn so you know where we start.) This time we gather around the table with a new set of players, so it’ll be fun to see what happens. As I recall, not a single gaming group I have played in, have been the same. I think it is refreshing as long it stays fun enough and people don’t take it too seriously.

As usual, I am also going to write session logs (I think…) as the campaign continues, but this time I’ll label it under “story hour” topic. So little adjustments to the story can be seen in order to make it more fluent. It’ll work as a session log and a kind of novel for the campaign, even though I must make clear right now, that I am NOT a writer, my native tongue is NOT English (oh really?) and I am not going to spend endless hours searching for typos etc from the written text, so do TRY to endure if you bother to read what is happening. Actually, I don’t even have enough skills to write perfectly fluent text without mistakes. Still I hope you do enjoy it as much as I do. Here is a little preview from the beginning chapter:

…Captain Phran Reddirge was a handsome man, grey-eyed and graceful and slender like a knife. He wore black leather boots, woolen pants and a fine supple coat of gleaming silvery chainmail over layers of gray wool and boiled leather. His presence demanded order like true icon of the men of the guard. Captain Reddirge had been sworn servant of the city for less than half of year, but none could say that there were others more suitable for the job than him. “There has been an incident once again,” captain said with a laid tone. Dwarf’s spine shivered. He knew that captain must have felt the same. “Someone important?” Rolo asked knowing well that captain would not have come if it wasn’t. “One of the High Houses,” captain started. “Olimar of House Nashivaar. The House is in outrage, they’re blaming the city guard for their incompetence”. Phran said it with remorse. “Now don’t blame yourself!” the dwarf pointed finger towards the captain, “This is not the first time when strange murders have been occurring in Athkatla. But from now on, the situation however is going to be more difficult for you. I suggest hiring few more men to keep patrol near the temple district. House Nashivaar supports the church of Cyric. I’m sure there is going to be some consequences to the guard.” Rolo said feeling sorry…

For the players. I hope that the beginning chapter helps you to get you to the mood. I wrote it to my pleasure, but also for yours since it gives various hints to the theme and plot of the campaign, as you may have noticed. Indirect route to give information as I have found it useful. If you bother to read it that is. ;) As we agreed, we’re gonna start from Amn, include both butt-kicking and drama and also some butt-kicking drama. I’ll inform the address when I know it! Try to get familiar with the rules. See you on sunday.

Ready, Set, Go!

Posted by MkaY On June - 16 - 2009

The meeting went well, though not everyone decided to show up. We went through, of course the actual introductions, but several things concerning the actual campaign. How do we like to play, theme, balance, set-up and you name it. Here are something about those things we went trough and decided:

Our campaign is going to have a balanced amount of butt-kicking, sneaky schemes and drama. For some of these, the players also play significant role and DM is going to need good background info for that. The actual characters should be ready for the first gaming session on sunday 28th of June. Remember also to write the 10-minute background since it helps me to create encounters tailored for certain characters. One more thing. There is one important npc “The Old Bard” to whom every character is connected. Link for 10-minute background: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1036571

Our characters are 2x rogues (different builds), Swordmage, Fighter. 2 humans, tiefling and a dwarf. We have heavy strikers so there are also need for cleric and other classes as well. We went trough the character details and modified them in order to make the start and the flow of campaign more fluent. Characters start from level 1, have 100gp to spend for equipment and are free to choose one 1-4 level item for themselves. Every 4th edition book goes, but not relics if there are such below those levels. The campaign starts from Amn, Athkala to be more precise. There is one npc to whom are all linked in a some way. Our party is working for (yet unnamed) thieves guild trough this person, gathered to do a specific task. (more detailed info in the next post)

I’ll inform the actual place where we can play after I know the exact location. Check the blog (I’ll put it in the sidebar) And finally one thing I forgot to mention. As a DM I’ll also give experience points due the roleplaying activity etc. as a little bonus. Not much, but a little now and then. If we are going to have a long campaign (hopefully) you can see it eventually in levels.

The next blog-post is going to be the actual beginning (storyline) and introductions to key-npc and player characters. It will work as a teaser until we finally get together for dice-rolling. See you soon!
